A survey of approximation algorithms for capacitated vehicle routing problems

Finding the shortest travelling tour of vehicles with capacity k from the depot to the customers is called the Capacity vehicle routing problem (CVRP). CVRP plays an essential position in logistics systems, and it is the most intensively studied problem in combinatorial optimization. In complexity, CVRP with k \ge 3 is an NP-hard problem, and it is APX-hard as well. We already knew that it could not be approximated in metric space. Moreover, it is the first problem resisting Arora's famous approximation framework. So, whether there is, a polynomial-time (1+ϵ\epsilon)-approximation for the Euclidean CVRP for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0 is still an open problem. This paper will summarize the research progress from history to up-to-date developments. The survey will be updated periodically.Comment: First submissio

Spinal nerve segmentation method and dataset construction in endoscopic surgical scenarios

Endoscopic surgery is currently an important treatment method in the field of spinal surgery and avoiding damage to the spinal nerves through video guidance is a key challenge. This paper presents the first real-time segmentation method for spinal nerves in endoscopic surgery, which provides crucial navigational information for surgeons. A finely annotated segmentation dataset of approximately 10,000 consec-utive frames recorded during surgery is constructed for the first time for this field, addressing the problem of semantic segmentation. Based on this dataset, we propose FUnet (Frame-Unet), which achieves state-of-the-art performance by utilizing inter-frame information and self-attention mechanisms. We also conduct extended exper-iments on a similar polyp endoscopy video dataset and show that the model has good generalization ability with advantageous performance. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Surface electromyography (sEMG) has been used for robotic rehabilitation engineering for volitional control of hand prostheses or elbow exoskeleton, however, using sEMG for volitional control of an upper limb exoskeleton has not been perfectly developed. The long-term goal of our study is to process shoulder muscle bio-electrical signals for rehabilitative robotic assistive device motion control. The purposes of this study included: 1) to test the feasibility of machine learning algorithms in shoulder motion pattern recognition using sEMG signals from shoulder and upper limb muscles, 2) to investigate the influence of motion speed, individual variability, EMG recording device, and the amount of EMG datasets on the shoulder motion pattern recognition accuracy. METHODS: A novel convolutional neural network (CNN) structure was constructed to process EMG signals from 12 muscles for the pattern recognition of upper arm motions including resting, drinking, backward-forward motion, and abduction motion. The accuracy of the CNN models for pattern recognition under different motion speeds, among individuals, and by EMG recording devices was statistically analyzed using ANOVA, GLM Univariate analysis, and Chi-square tests. The influence of EMG dataset number used for CNN model training on recognition accuracy was studied by gradually increasing dataset number until the highest accuracy was obtained. RESULTS: Results showed that the accuracy of the normal speed CNN model in motion pattern recognition was 97.57% for normal speed motions and 97.07% for fast speed motions. The accuracy of the cross-subjects CNN model in motion pattern recognition was 79.64%. The accuracy of the cross-device CNN model in motion pattern recognition was 88.93% for normal speed motion and 80.87% for mixed speed. There was a statistical difference in pattern recognition accuracy between different CNN models. CONCLUSION: The EMG signals of shoulder and upper arm muscles from the upper limb motions can be processed using CNN algorithms to recognize the identical motions of the upper limb including drinking, forward/backward, abduction, and resting. A simple CNN model trained by EMG datasets of a designated motion speed accurately detected the motion patterns of the same motion speed, yielding the highest accuracy compared with other mixed CNN models for various speeds of motion pattern recognition. Increase of the number of EMG datasets for CNN model training improved the pattern recognition accuracy

Spatial-temporal distribution and transport flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a large hydropower reservoir of Southeast China: Implication for impoundment impacts

Abstract(#br)In order to investigate the impacts of dam-related water impoundment on the spatial-temporal variations and transport of anthropogenic organic pollutants, 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in water samples from the Shuikou Reservoir (SKR) of the Minjiang River. The SKR was formed after the construction of the Shuikou Dam, which is the largest hydropower station in Southeast China. The water samples were collected from the backwater zone of the SKR, in both the wet and dry seasons, corresponding to the drainage and impoundment periods of water flow, respectively. The concentrations of the dissolved PAHs in surface water from the wet season (average of 161 ± 97 ng L −1 ) were significantly higher (ANOVA, p < 0.01) than those from the dry season (average of 43 ± 21 ng L −1 ). PAH concentrations in the SKR decreased from upstream (industrialized cities) to downstream (rural towns or counties), indicating high PAH loads caused by intensive urbanization effects. The high proportions of 3-ring PAHs in the wet season were from local sources via surface runoff; while the elevated proportions of 4- to 6- ring PAHs in the dry season reflected atmospheric deposition emerged of these PAHs and/or volatilization of 3-ring PAHs enhanced. Molecular diagnostic ratios of PAH isomers in multimedium and principal component analysis indicated that PAH presence in the SKR was mainly attributed to pyrogenic origin. The isomeric ratios of fluoranthene to fluoranthene plus pyrene in the wet season were homogeneous, implying that there were continuous new inputs along the riverine runoff. However, these ratios showed spatial downward trend in the dry season, indicating continued degradation of PAHs occurred along the transport path during the impoundment period. The input and output fluxes of PAHs in the SKR were 5330 kg yr −1 and 2991 kg yr −1 , revealing that the reservoir retained contaminants after impoundment of the hydropower dam

The Applications of Finite Element Analysis in Proximal Humeral Fractures

Proximal humeral fractures are common and most challenging, due to the complexity of the glenohumeral joint, especially in the geriatric population with impacted fractures, that the development of implants continues because currently the problems with their fixation are not solved. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative assessments are crucial in management of those patients. Finite element analysis, as one of the valuable tools, has been implemented as an effective and noninvasive method to analyze proximal humeral fractures, providing solid evidence for management of troublesome patients. However, no review article about the applications and effects of finite element analysis in assessing proximal humeral fractures has been reported yet. This review article summarized the applications, contribution, and clinical significance of finite element analysis in assessing proximal humeral fractures. Furthermore, the limitations of finite element analysis, the difficulties of more realistic simulation, and the validation and also the creation of validated FE models were discussed. We concluded that although some advancements in proximal humeral fractures researches have been made by using finite element analysis, utility of this powerful tool for routine clinical management and adequate simulation requires more state-of-the-art studies to provide evidence and bases

A 3D-hydrodynamic model for predicting the environmental fate of chemical pollutants in Xiamen Bay, southeast China.

Simulation model is very essential for predicting the environmental fate and the potential environmental consequences of chemical pollutants including those from accidental chemical spills. However very few of such simulation model is seen related to Chinese costal water body. As the first step toward our final goal to develop a simulation model for the prediction and the risk assessment of chemical pollutants in Chinese coastal water, this study developed a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model of Xiamen Bay (XMB). This hydrodynamic model was externally derived by meteorological data, river discharge and boundary conditions of XMB. We used the model to calculate the physical factors, especially water temperature, salinity and flow field, from June to September 2016 in XMB. The results demonstrated a good match between observations and simulations, which underscores the feasibility of this model in predicting the spatial-temporal concentration of chemical pollutants in the coastal water of XMB. Longitudinal salinity distributions and the mixing profile of river-sea interactions are discussed, including the obvious gradation of salinity from the river towards sea sites shown by the model. We further assumed that 1000 kg and 1000 mg/L of a virtual chemical pollutant leaked out from Jiulong River (JR) estuary (point source) and whole XMB (non-point source), respectively. The model illustrates that it takes three months for XMB to become purified when point source pollution occurs in the estuary, while half a year to be required in the case of non-point source pollution across the entire bay. Moreover, the model indicated that pollutants can easily accumulate in the western coastal zone and narrow waters like Maluan Bay, which can guide environmental protection strategies
